Want higher “organic” Google search engine rankings? Here are some Google Search Engine Optimizations Tips: your effort needs to be split between “off page” and “on page”. NB: organic search engine optimization refers to the natural rankings that you see on left hand side of the Google Search results – as opposed to the paid or sponsored that you will see in the right hand column (or occasionally at the very top of the left hand column).

“On page” is far easier to achieve: on-page factors (such as meta tags, headings, links, site structure and to lesser extent these days: keyword frequency) can be easily developed by your webmaster.

Whereas off-page SEO factors can be manipulated to “fool” Google into gaining higer rankings (yes, Google do not approve of such practises). Essentially it requires getting inbound links to your site from external websites. Typically this is achieved by:

Natural Links: sites link to you for the content
Press releases
Article distribution
Social networking via sites like Digg and Slashdot
Link campaigns, such as asking complementary businesses to provide links
Directory listings
Link exchanges
Three-way linking
One-way linking
Blogging
Forum posting
Multiway linking

Some webmasters will purchase links from authority websites to manipulate rankings – this is a serious malpractice and if Google discovers (or is informed of) such practises you can be severely penalised and dumped out of the rankings.

This video explains why it is NOT possible to guess – but does illustrate how to see your backlinks.

Off-page factors are the KEY – one major influence is the number of backlinks and there is a free way to get links.

Remember – that the page supplying the link must be on theme, and the anchor text should reflect the content of the landing page.

* Do not use the same anchor text (this is a flag for Google)
* Do add some “mum” links (ie the anchor text could be your url, click here, cool site – why? this is what is natural!!)
* Do mix in some nofollow links (natural – and the link page may pass some trust; do you not think Wikipedia pages pass some trust – they do use editors!)
